Sonnet for the Aegean

That crystal sea of shining, beryl waves
Of sunlit shores and ancient, azure coves
Preserved by soaring cliffs and rocky caves
And ringed by auric sands and olive groves
A graceful sea of splendid, shining shores
And isles of lavish green and fertile earth
With ruined scars from bygone Grecian wars
And also those of peace and joyous mirth
The truest birth of all the Occident
And of the Greek and Roman Byzantine
The beauteous sea of the West's advent
On great Hellenic waves of Azurine
The land of epic gods and odysseys
Is land that floats upon the Aegean Sea
