South Florida Christmas

By Birdie

The sky is clear and blue and my back is being warmed
By the sunlight through the window and the streets outside are swarmed
By the people Christmas shopping in their shorts and t-shirts
And after Christmas dinner we have ice cream for dessert.

It's Christmas...
Christmas in South Florida.

We leave our windows open so the breeze blows through the screen
And we'll never have a white Christmas, all our trees are evergreen
We harbor all the birds that migrate from the frozen northern states
We surf instead of sled and wear sandals, not ice skates.

It's Christmas...
Christmas in South Florida.

Our days never get below forty degrees...
Windows don't frost and our ponds never freeze...
It's Christmas...
Christmas in South Florida.

Sand angels and sandmen are made by the sea
Where the warm salt water splashes the swaying palm tree
We spend our holidays in a place most serene
To us, this is the perfect Christmas scene!

It's Christmas...
Christmas in South Florida.

It's Christmas...
Christmas in South Florida.

This Poems Story

For a long time I had yearned for the inspiration to write a Christmas poem, but once I started I simply couldn't continue and these experiences led me to quit trying. However, I heard the song Mele Kalikimaka, and I thought, 'Hey, why can't I write one about South Florida, where I live?' Then I sat down and wrote this. I would hope for this to be made into a song, but unfortunately I can't find anyone to put it to music.
