Spotlight

Center stage, asleep and awake
Cheers, but for who?
They clap with anticipation
For what? Why am I here?
They lose patience
They begin to jeer and boo
They toss bottles and hot dogs
They scream, "Fraud!"
They demand refunds
They demand my head
"I'm innocent," I scream, "I've committed no crime"
"Liar," they scream, "Hang him!"
"Wait! Can't you see I am but a man?
Can't you see that you have sought too much from me?
Can't you see that none but the gods can grant you what you seek?"
"Burn him," they continue to scream, "Phony!" "Fake!"
I see there is no speaking here
There is no reason, there is no love
They will not listen
I pour the gas
Into my hair, into my shirt
I light a match
Their faces glow
They cheer
Satisfied
They go home
