Dragged feet across the floor.
Feeling confused,
What happened?
You were fine.
People crying,
People dying.

Beeping monitors,
Needles and wires.
You don’t face me,
You don’t smile.
Cold and pale,
Too small in the big bed.

It’s not you,
No wedding ring’
Hands slack and swollen.

But it is you,
Manicure on your nails,
Curly hair everywhere.

Sharp pain, dread.
What happened?
You were fine.

I lean into your ear.
Whispering, begging.
I love you,
Stay, stay,
I need you.

You don’t hear.
But I still plea,
Stay, stay, stay.
