Strike of the Snake

if you’ve ever seen a snake
devour its prey
then you’ve watched it take—
take a mouse’s breath away

if you’ve ever seen a snake strike
to prepare its dinner
then you’ve watched its teeth, knifelike,
as it becomes a killer

but have you ever seen
something much more dangerous
have you ever been the cuisine
of something quite traitorous

because some people own snakes
they are nothing more than pets
but others are snakes
and they bring nothing but regrets

they slither into your life
and you’ll never see them coming
then you’re hit with strife
as they are much too cunning

strike you in the back
spill all your secrets
as they mercilessly attack
preying on your weakness

they’ll disappear before your eyes
as if they were never there
you’re left alone with your own demise
telling others to beware

you’ll know this if you’ve ever seen a snake
devour its prey
then you’ve watched it take—
take your own breath away
