Summer (for Jill)

It is summer
And you stand before me, fresh
Young
Vibrant.
And I love you for it.
I reach out to you, and your shirt is clammy,
Damp with unseen perspiration
And I love you all the more
for the sweat that traces the curves of your spine.
You are embarrassed by my touch
On your back
As if there is something wrong with being affected by the heat.
And I love you more for the discomfort you display.
And the warmth outside is nothing
Compared to the warmth we share between us
That makes my heart and soul
Sweat rivers of anticipation every time you are near,
Every time we talk,
Every time we touch,
Every time you let me hold you in my arms.
And I love you all the more for the feelings you create in me.
It is summer
And you stand before me, fresh,
Young
Vibrant.
And I love you.
