We are surrounded by thousands of footprints
The footprints of those from the past and present
Of those who are walking or rolling
Who have yet to plant themselves in our realm

Living, Passed, Furry, Feathered
Human, Swimming, Burning, Floating
Earthly, Strangers

The scholars
Darwin, Jung and Freud
The musicians
Lennon, Joplin and Jackson
The poets
Frost, Dickinson and Barrett Browning
The familiars
Mother, father, brother, sister,
aunt, uncle, grandmother, grandfather,
cousin, friend, cat, dog, bird
The who are yous
Blind date, cashier, nurse, teacher,
coworker, pilot, officer, chef, minister,
friend, intuitive, politician, musician
The elements
Fire, tornado, heatwave, ice, snow, hurricane, earthquake

We are surrounded by thousands of footprints
That will leave permanent marks on our soul and our world
