Thank You For Your Honesty

I told you you meant nothing to me. I lied.
You don't mean nothing.
But no longer everything either.
You mean hope, to me.
Not because of who you are,
but because of who I am,
who I was.
Who I will be.
I didn't realize that when I looked at you,
I didn't see you.
I saw my hopes.
And I didn't recognize them.
And then you changed.
And I thought it was you,
but it was my hopes that hurt me.

This wasn't even me.
It was an unintentional mask
made to make you like me.
You saw through it, and that was good.

I know now it wasn't even you I loved.
I loved the person I will someday meet,
and I saw them in you.

So thank you for your honesty.
