That Day

When the phone rang and you picked up,
your voice sounded tired
and sad.
Like you had been crying.

When I asked how are you,
you just ignored me and laughed.
But I knew you faked it,
that you weren't

I should never have left you
when you needed me most.
If only I knew what you were
to do.
Maybe I could have stopped you.

When the police showed up an hour later,
I knew it was too late.
Why didn't I stay? Why didn't I?

I'll never forgive myself for leaving
that day.
