The American Soldier

You are the empty chair at the family table
The unused bed, upstairs
The car that is covered, in the garage
The hobbies growing dusty, in the attic
You are the American soldier
You are parents growing older
The spouse whose heart is aching
The tears in a child's eye
You are the American soldier
You are the face of courage
The sacrifice of life, for others
The fighter of freedom
The mentor of honor, in all things
You are the American soldier
You are the loss of limbs
The scars that will not heal
The mind that cannot forget
You are the American soldier
Thank you for your service
