The Battle of Shiloh

When you were only a child
I watched as you were nearly choked to death
By a full grown man

I watched him pick you up by the throat
He threw your small body up the stairs

I’ve seen your adolescent body thrown through a door
The impact smashed the door off the hinges
Your fall broke a box of holiday ornaments

You always had it the worst
But you never left my side
Taking the brunt of the abuse
To make sure I was safe

Now, you are the best man I know
In all your darkness, filth, and pain
I see your light

I can never thank you enough for protecting me from him
