The Colors Of Addiction
You think I’m a dirty, forsaken addict
You’ve never suffered
I guess it must be so
But still, I cannot accept
That I’m the only whose sick
How can you claim to know so much when you don’t know
What
It
Feels
Like
You think you’ve truly suffered
That every ailment has an antidote
But I’ve met sober survivors
They have life
Have a story -
Leaving a legacy
You think only people whose life experiences match yours
Are people
You think you're so mighty, casting out addiction in denial can somehow be used as protection
But if you’ve never battled your own voice inside your head telling you that you’re better off dead and that poisonous vices are the only hand that will hold yours until the inevitable end
You’ll learn things
You never knew
You never wanted to know
Have you ever been challenged by all your pain?
Or asked the great gods above why you were chosen?
Can you heal yourself with community?
Can you heal yourself from within?
Come run through all unprocessed childhood trauma
Come taste the sweet restrictions of addiction
Come roll in the knowledge all around
And for once, never question what we’re worth
The NA community is my family
The AA community is my soundboard
And we are all connected
In a room, in a meeting, in the hearts of those who decided to win
How high have I pushed my body?
If you don’t read Progression
You’ll never know
And you’ll know now the forgiveness of an addict
If you keep thinking you’re better than all of us
Just because you were lucky enough
Never to be

Inspired by Disney\'s Pocahontas Colors of the Wind - The Colors of Addiction is a poem written with brave and honest intention while attempting to draw out empathy, compassion, and kindness from those who carry a negative connotation of what addiction is, and those who suffer from it. We live in a world where it\'s too easy to write off a person just because they may not have the same life experiences as others; this poem is a vocal representation of the recovery community and all those who are sober survivors.
i felt it! i love this!
Hi! I really enjoyed your poetry. I think poems with beautiful visuals or illustrations are doing really well online these days and often reach a much wider audience. Even with a small investment, adding artwork to your poems can make them more engaging and shareable. I'm a commission-based artist, and I've been creating custom artwork for about 3 years. I'd love to help bring your poems to life with visuals if you're ever interested. You can reach me anytime via em@il: contact.lilaclines@gm@il.com Ig: _lilac_lines_ I'd be happy to chat!
