The Creatures of the Night

The light flickers in through the windowpane
Dividing into a million different shards
Swaying in the moonlight to a silent refrain
That only Creatures of the Night comprehend
It is a mysterious wonder
How these shards make up the reflections of the heart
Under night’s fierce and gentle cover
In and out, back and forth, together and apart
On the walls, in the shelves, in the books, among the pages
Leaping from tales that have long been told
Released from their dusty daytime cages
Creatures of the Night come alive before our dreaming eyes
Swaying in the moonlight to a silent refrain
Until the silver lining comes on the wings of morning skies
As though faint from the night’s dance
Creatures of the Night disappear to rest
On the walls, in the shelves, in the books, among the pages
Where, until again summoned by the refrain, remain
