The Elder Tree

I came across a tree so old
It's branches seemed to creak
And whispers groaned throughout the bark
Of ancient times they speak

And in every instant of a day,
Between mid-noon and dawn
The tired leaves they gently sway
Until the sun is gone

The birds have made many a nest
Inside the Elder Tree
Where the baby birds find their rest
For many a century

I like to think the old tree smiles
As it watches the whole world grow
As it stands in rain and sleet for miles
And watches as it snows
