The first day of chemo

‘Twas the first day of chemo
I sat all snug in my chair
Waiting for the nurse to return
With some concoction all prepared

The nurse was cheerful but efficient
As she locates my port
Oh lord, I hope this thing works!
Stick! The ball is now in my court.

Here is a bell to use in an emergency
Notify us if you have any trouble
To get up, just unplug and take along
If you ring we will be here on the double

I sat back in my chair and thought a minute
I felt like saying 'Hi, I'm Sandy I'm new to this cancer’
But, as I looked around the room full of patients
I feared no one would answer

Does cancer has some 12 step program?
I feel like I am on step six.
Surgery, Chemo, next Radiation…
Or does it depend upon what the doctor has in his bag of tricks?

Today starts the chemo chapter
The continuation of a long fight indeed
But, I looked around the room again; I thank God Almighty
As there are others there far more in need.
