The freedom of a slave

The freedom of a slave

They said, “You are nothing but the white mans slave!”
We said in fear, “No we are not your slaves.”
They said, “We are your oppressors. You are the oppressed.”
We said, “No we are not oppressed.”
“We control you. You are bond. You are not free,” they said.
“They do not control us. We are free,” trembling we said.
“Black man, you will always be less than the white man,” they said.
“White and black men are equal!” we said with confidence.
And therefore they killed us
They killed us until remorse filled their hearts

“White and black men are equal,” they said in regret.
“Black man, you will always be less than the white man”, we said.
“We do not control you. You are free,” they said.
“You control us. We are bond. We are not free”, we said.
They said, “No, you are not oppressed.”
We said, “They oppress us. We are oppressed.”
They said with confidence, “No, you are not our slaves!”
We said, “You were right. We are nothing but the white mans slave.”
And therefore we killed them.
We killed them until remorse filled our hearts

And therefore the black man remains oppressed
Oppressed by the white man and
oppressed by himself
The black man remains oppressed
And history continues to kill anyone
who dares to say otherwise
