The Girl You Used to Know

People ask me what happened to the girl they used to know.
She’s gone. I let her go.
She’s been mistreated and misunderstood.
She’s gone through things no one else would.
She wore her heart on her sleeve,
had it broken so many times you wouldn’t believe.
Yeah that girl I used to be?
She got smart. She’s no longer me.
She traded in her innocence for a coat of armor.
She put up walls so no one could harm her.
She blocked it all out.
She doesn’t want to talk about what it was all about.
She learned to hide her emotions.
Found it easier just to go through the motions.
That girl you used to see?
She grew up from all the things she shouldn’t be.
