The Giving of a Rose

The giving of a rose to the western world
Symbolizes a lasting love,
But why is this prickled bush
Admired so tenderly by its recipient?
Is it the passionate colors of its petals,
That show resemblance to the cheeks
As one blushes to the kind words of
The lover's whispered breath?
Is it those thorns that keep our hearts
Reminded to handle with care?
The short lived delicacy of powdered petals
Have our minds set to perceive
And act upon that swelling affection
While the shared moment is known?
For once it is picked it begins to wither
With faded colors in the blink of life's eye.
In so, does this tell us to simply smell roses,
Repel our desires of our lusting love.
Carry in memory the fragrance of the temporary
Lasting love of the rose.
