The Greatest Weapon

Sticks and stones may break my bones,
But words will never hurt me--

The phrase that conquered the test of time,
But always remained a lie.

They failed to mention how words last the longest.
Broken bones heal over time,
But words,
They cut the deepest.

They hide in the darkest depths of our minds,
Waiting for the perfect time to jump out and crush your self-esteem.

People lash out at each other without a second thought,
But are too cowardly to throw a real punch.
Instead, they launch insults like grenades in a war zone,
Because they know words are the greatest weapon.
