The Last Day

A flutter down deep was all I had
a glimmer of hope, wavering at best
but false and unfounded
trying to keep us alive one more day

Your black eyes were darting
that morning, looking at me
then away, searching for something
and hiding yourself, lulling me to leave

Your last look before you shut the door
was disgust, wishing for someone not me
and it was over then in that moment
and all the others like that one

Your anger was growing and underneath
we both grew to hate each other
while begging the other to stay
we hid ourselves until there was nothing left to see

There were no words left to save us
no more chances for change
and when you said you wished I would
just leave, I believed you
