The Lies Behind Believe

I believed
In unicorns, and magic;
Dragons, and monsters;
Fairies, and castles with moats
As a kid.
I think we all did
Until our parents said "they aren't real,
but God is."

I believed in Santa Claus,
Baby New Year, the cotton-tailed bunny
That layed eggs,
And a real life Uncle Sam-
The guy who walks around
Dressed up like the American flag-
Until my parents said,
"They aren't real," and "don't be silly
Uncle Sam's dead."

They stick all of this nonsense
In our heads and let us believe it,
Then say, "none of it ever was.
They don't exist,
But God does."
