The Mermaid of Black River

Miss Mary knew the art of scrubbing
dirty white clothes with dried corn husks.
The technique of boiling and pounding
blood stained clothes on river stones

How to use blue to enhance the white
in white clothes. The direction of the breeze and
angles of the sun so the clothes could dry faster
than a man made dryer from Maytag

They found Miss Mary on a hot summer's day
floating in Black River on her back with a smile
on her heart-shaped-leathery-blueberry face

It was the way she'd wanted to go""
a beautiful, peaceful smile fixed on her face
looking up into the clear blue sky

Someone said, "the sun was shining
directly on her face; it had looked as if she
was glowing like a candle in the dark."
