The Monster

Unearthly sounds-

Grunts, wheezes, whiffles,

Long, drawn-out grinding noises.

I bury my head beneath my blanket.

This beast can't reach me now-

Or can it?

A small whimper escapes.

Nana is up in a moment-

"What's wrong?"

"A monster! There's a monster in the bedroom!"

She laughs.

"That's just Grandad-snoring."

She settles my blankets.

"Go back to sleep."

She says it's just Grandad,

But I'm not so sure.

Who knows what monsters lurk in unfamiliar rooms?

Silence falls.

I peek apprehensively into the darkness.

Still silence. But then...

Oh no.

The monster's back again.

No matter what Nana says,

I don't think I'll sleep much
