The Old Days

I miss the days
When war was just a card game,
And race issues were about who was faster.

I miss the days
When the worst thing you could get from boys was cooties,
And the worst kind of pain came from skinning your knees.

I miss the days
When slavery and poverty were only things you learned in history class
And when the only enemies you had were your siblings.

I miss the days
When Dad’s shoulders was the highest point on Earth,
And Mom was just Wonder Woman in disguise.

I miss the days
When your only worries came from too much homework,
And goodbyes meant “see you tomorrow”.

I miss the days
When we all wanted to grow up.
And thought that we all could.
