The Pearl Earrings

I wear pearl earrings with a pleasant smile and a quiet demeanor.
This maintains a sense of purity and dignity.

So I take off the pearl earrings before going into his house.
It was time to drop the façade.

...

I leave his house with a lump in my throat, stench on my skin, grease in my hair, and smeared eye makeup.
So I drive home and put on the pearl earrings from before.

The dark circles around my eyes and the bright pearls do not match in meaning.

So why is it that I am so confused?

...

Today, I kept the pearls on. Are they tainted or I am regaining my dignity?
