The Rearview Mirror
You watched me in the rearview mirror during car rides--
My pig tails and innocence, wondering eyes wide.
You watch me now in the rearview mirror during the long drive ahead
Memorizing every last word of conversations said--
My eyes still wide with excitement, though a little scared,
And to be honest, I am a little sad.
It was you who supported and guided me all this way
To stand on my own, leading me to this day.
I may make mistakes, maybe a few,
But it will allow me to learn, and I'll make do.
My boxes are unpacked, room is all set, my roommates are here;
It's about that time, final conversation to be said is near.
Hug me tight, no need to cry;
I'll do alright, it's time to say good-bye.
May you see me in the rearview mirror as you drive away
Becoming an adult and making you proud
With what you have taught me all along the way.
