The Refectory

What is a promise to a thief?
What is a prayer amongst broken beliefs?
Who are the enemies among my peers?
Why does this devil suddenly feel so near?
One traitor in this room will stab me in the back tonight
One stray at this table is planning to take flight
It only takes one liar in a house built on loyalty
It takes only one set of rags to steal all of your royalty
Only one vein through for a needle full of heroin
How do you stop the disease spreading from within?
How do you sort through all the hay
When you're looking for a pin?
I frown, I frown, I frown
But they want to see me grin
I'm down, I'm down, I'm down
I am dying for a sin
I hide alone in the deepest pit of a dark cave
I search for sun and my God to keep me brave
My journey has not ended
And my journey has not begun
I asked my people to praise me
But worthy of praise, my God is the only one
He leads me to an opening
He leads me with His love
My knees, my elbows rest in dirt
But my soul is sent above
