The Shadow in Kalin’s Eyes

He walked across the stage, tassel swaying carelessly past his face.
I stood from my discount seat, cheek wet with the trail of a tear.
He was a child when you last gazed through eyes of an earthly father,
watching his tentative steps as he reached to you for his future.
Then in an instant, you were gone.
As he grew I noticed you there, mirrored in his intensity.
His studied scowl, a reminder he was indeed your son.
The years narrowed his face, his body molded into that of a man;
his intelligence, wit and fierce independence a legacy from you.
He was your gift of remembrance.
As he begins life after tassels, you would be proud of your son,
taking his first tentative steps and reaching to God for his future.
May you know that though you are gone, you live in him still.
Your light and dark dance gracefully in his soul-
You are the shadow in Kalin's eyes.
