The Shadows

Silently, sneaky, stealthily
Around the shadows creep
They’re my friends,
My partners in crime,
Those shadows you see
They may not be
What you might think.
They scare, they taunt
Torture and haunt,
The shadows I love,
Always will they embrace me,
Loving and welcoming they will be,
At times, the darkness they invade,
Until the world I have come to know,
Starts to fade.
Sometimes I love the shadows, others, I hate
And then I thought to myself,
What even are my dear shadows?
Figures, absences of light?
Perhaps, only part of our imagination.
They follow and imitate,
They torture and hate,
But why?
