The Shooting Star

High above the atmosphere
there sails a shooting star
that circles by our planet
and rockets past the stars.
Its tail glows so brightly
in the dark of outer space;
the trail that it leaves behind
is thin and fine as lace.
It weaves its way through asteroid fields,
around the planet Mars,
and back into our view again
careening through the stars.
It turns around behind the moon
and sails into the night,
continuing its onward path
seeking out the light.
Carrying the wishes
of the people near and far,
high above the atmosphere
there sails a shooting star.
