The Silence

Surrounded by the ever-still silence,
But then out from the distance a sound!
Oh, how quickly that sound spread, like a virus.
The silence was now drowned.

The sound was that of a woman's cries.
My heart now struck with sorrow,
As I drew near, there lay a child with closed eyes-
That poor young boy who would not see the light of tomorrow.

The crowd nearby began to bicker.
Some men shouted: Sorcery! Disease! Nay, murder!
The bickering now becoming a frightful figure,
Soon the men began blaming one another.

After an hour, not one man stood alive.
The silence once again arrived.
