The Smell of Fire
The smell of fire on my clothes
Tickles and delights my nose.
It lingers in my mem’ry long
Like an old familiar song.
I close my eyes and breathe in deep
Just before I go to sleep.
The melody it plays to me
Brings me where I love to be.
It takes me back into the night
Sitting by the firelight.
We talk and laugh, my friends and I,
Minutes, hours racing by
Until, at last, I have to go,
Leave the fire’s warmth and glow.
And yet, it follows close behind
Burning brightly in my mind.
So now I dream beneath the moon
Smelling still that happy tune.
