The Snow on 9/11

snow in September. Falling
from a cloudless sky,
stinging the eyes of small children
who have nowhere to look but up.

covering the lonely streets.
Invading open mouths,
the fire burning their lungs.

swallowing cars, hotdog stands and
people. How can the city in the sky
disappear? Was there ever
anything here?

we watched it consume
our peace, burying
a place
a time
a life.
