The Society

Who had decided
that only boys could play in dirt
while she was strictly instructed
to straighten out her skirt?

Why before the sun sets
she should walk home in its light?
Is it because it’s far too scary
to be on the streets at night?

When she wants to play with her toys
why is it snatched away from her?
She’s forced to give up her dreams.
She’s forced into the house of a stranger.

So she never asked that question
how could they say that she was free
when she’d forgotten who she was
before they said who she should be.
