The Sound of Silence

I have heard the sound of silence,
I was raised in such a way.
No one listened, no one noticed,
Unseen, unheard and rarely caught.
Only if an errand needed,
Or a pointless lesson taught.
I have heard the sound of silence,
Deafening my inner soul.
Silent thoughts of rage and anger,
So many things left unsaid.

How I hated how you raised me,
How I felt your strength and pain.
How I feared you, much too often,
When you raised your hand again.

I have heard the sound of silence,
Felt the hot, close, violent breath.
Now I realize, now I'm older-
It was you, who made me deaf.
