The Tailboard

The tailboard is a unique place,
Found at the Engine’s rear,
It functions in a lot of roles,
I’ll share some of them here…

Firemen used to ride thereon,
As everybody knows,
But now we only step on it,
To reach the fire hose.

A “hotwash” is a meeting,
For critique from our B/C.
It’s held next to the tailboard,
Of the first-in company.

When kids come to the station,
For a visit and a tour,
They’re pictured there upon it,
Smiles ear to ear for sure.

Of course after the fire,
You can use it as a shelf,
And simply sit down on it,
To rest your weary self.

Or with one foot resting on it,
Stands the veteran, cool as ice,
Bent, with arm across his leg,
Imparting sage advice.

And for all its many uses,
It really only has one con,
It’s truly not the greatest place,
To set your coffee on!
