The Unknown

I sit and look out upon my aching heart;
I hear my thoughts whispering at night—wishing,
Praying, and hoping that we will be together again;
I see my best friend about to leave in three days
For the next two years to the great state of Texas;
It feels like a million years until he will come back;
I see my whole world drastically transforming
Into one so unfamiliar that it frightens me;
I fantasize frequently for freedom from forlornness
I mark the days until he will return to me—
To make the agonizing next twenty four months
Pass by quickly; I see myself writing letters
Each week to communicate what my life has brought me
Since he has been gone—I see him opening them with a
Smile from ear to ear as the anticipation grows;
I observe the excitement dancing in his eyes
For the journey ahead; the unpredictability,
Stimulating something inside his soul; I observe
The hot wet tears strolling down my face as we say
“Goodbye”—they will be flowing like a salty river,
Dripping down to the icy cold ground;
All these—All these amazing memories start flooding
Back to my mind as I think of the fun we had together;
I sit, looking out now at the bright future ahead
