The Unread Page

I thought one phrase would be enough.
One word could make it true.
I didn’t need to check the other page.
If I believed it, I was through.

But then came troubles and I thought
If I read the book this time I
Could get away and would be okay.
But I was wrong and my heart died.

I turned the page a minute too late.
I heard the news, but couldn’t stop it.
If I had only read that page,
I wouldn’t be where I am now.
