Their Eyes Were Watching God

By

Their Eyes Were Watching God
And we were watching them
But who was watching us
As we sat there
Converting into dust
Perhaps the children?
Yes the children
They must be watching us. They can still see us.
Because
They can’t see God yet
They have their eyes closed
They still have their cherished souls
With hands reaching toward the sun
Suddenly
The children turn towards us, eyes steadily opening
They are watching us
Walking to us
Perhaps to save us?
We won't ever know
Because as they reach us
They no longer trust us, They no longer see us
They stand still. Heads now facing the sky
Their eyes are now watching God
And we continue to fade
I hope someday
They remember us.
