There Were Gods

There were gods in the old days too of course but people didn't
Believe in them then either, unless they happened to issue
An edict very much in line with their own secret desires.

And so the killer looked up to the void and saw that killing
Was stitched into the fabric of the universe, and said that
It was his duty to kill.

And the rapist and the pedophile likewise looked up but saw
Something different which they could not understand,
Compelling them to obey.

And the wise ones also searched for the meaning behind things
But found nothing, and so they worshipped the nothingness
Until they became one with it.

And in their nothingness they found what the killer finds
When he beheads his victim, and what the rapist finds in
Spaces where he is not welcome.
