This Poems Story

I wrote "They Took My Brother" on a whim. I was so empowered by stories I heard in my African-American studies class Black Lives Matter and shows on TV that went deep into issues of slavery, bondage, and, above all, family. The words kept echoing in my head and the poem just came together. Family is life and I just wrote about a time in America when a minority of people knew that better than, I believe, any other race as well as my own feelings on the concept of someone just taking one of my siblings. Thank you to my AAS professor Claudrena Harold at UVA whose wonderful lectures inspired the topic of my poem.
