This Half-Empty Glass

By Ben Sy

It’s the beginning of a new year…
The smiling sun outside shines
So bright and oblivious
To this hangover of mine.
I wish the clouds would turn to smoke –
Setting fire to the sky!
Choking the songs
Out of morning birds for miles,
As I breathe frost through the window blinds.
Nothing has changed...
Except for my tasteful brand of cancer
So hastily harpooned into my boyish grin.
While my mind molests more reasons
To make another resolution:
Those coagulating conclusions to change
Aborted by the latest epiphany.
Nonetheless, it affects me the least -
This life I live to forget
Like a fool who forfeits his dreams for love,
As he clings to the notion
That it will last forever...
Only to glance at the mirror
That mimics his fake smile
Smeared across an ageing face.
Tilting back his half-empty glass of spirits
To greet another year gone…
