This Is the Day: Ashley’s Poem

Seven thousand miles from home,
The sun rises and shines upon the soldiers
Walking along the road after a hard night's journey
The bomb tucked beside the road waiting
Waiting to shatter the morning calm
This is the day America lost a hero
The explosion rips through the dawn
Seven thousand miles from home
Help arriving
Arriving too late
The helicopter carries her body; angels carry her soul
This is the day America lost a hero
In a home in North Carolina,
A newlywed husband awakes from a nightmare,
Military men at the door
In a home in Ohio,
A mother cries, a father slumped in shock
A brother silent, a twin sister numb
This is the day America lost a hero
A seven thousand mile journey
Delivering her home
A folded flag for her service
A 21-gun salute for her sacrifice
Numerous events in her memory
Millions free because she gave all
This is the day America remembers a hero
This is the day America remembers 1st Lt. Ashley White Stumpf
