Thoughts on a Winter Night

We sit by the fire in our home
in the woods. Winter has set in
with a vengeance.

Stella the dog lies at our feet, chewing an old white bone
that long ago
lost its scent and taste

Sasha the cat lies in front of the fire,
her golden eyes now half-closed
stretching her body in the delicious red warmth

The world, with its troubles
is always with us

But for now life is good,
here in this deep,
dark green wilderness
at the foot of our great,
cold white mountain
