To Be a Woman
I am a woman when I get dressed and do my make-up.
I am an Amazon warrior when I see a loved one get hurt,
ready with words coated in poison and my fists, if necessary.
I am a girl when I see something with glitter I have to buy.
I am a widow when I see my ex with his new girlfriend.
I am a daughter when I see my mom after months of missing her.
I am a human being when I share my wealth with those who have less.
I am a lover when my partner and I do the dance of bodies.
I am a woman who is many things: strong, powerful and independent.
But sometimes, when the world gets a little too much,
I am also a scared young girl, tired,
looking for shelter and a hand to hold.
