To Be Continued

I had it all
the chilled air, you were everywhere that fall
your eyes in the way I pondered
your laugh in the way I danced, never somber
the dark sky and I, we both cried but you never let us fall
but sometimes we'd slip through the cracks
in your gentle hands, then bounce back
it was not difficult to pretend
put up a facade, best friends, fake amends
and they say all good things come to an end
what goes up must come down
and by high time the ticking clock was following me around
short goodbyes, no replies, the sky and I
conjoined forever, better than ever now that's all I had
because I was closer to the stars than I was to your heart
minuscule light years in the shadow of my deepest fears
they say all good things come to an end
what goes up must come down
except the sky, still high, but you let me fall
because I guess you can't have it all
