To Grow Up Asian American is to Grow Up Alone

To grow up Asian American is to grow up alone
It means to eat lunch
Alone with food your peers ridicule you for
Mom’s homemade dish passed from her parents turned into a joke

To grow up Asian American is to grow up alone
It means to have parents of different backgrounds
Knowing where they are from
Yet not understanding the new middle ground created for you

To grow up Asian American is to grow up alone
Staring at the television wondering if you’ll ever be as pretty as the white girl
It means to wonder why your hair is black and eyes so dark
Wondering if you’d ever be worth it on the screen

To grow up Asian American is to grow up alone
It means to be loved when convenient
When anime, mochi ice cream, and top ramen are in style
But to be hated for first place when a white person tried so hard

To grow up Asian American is to grow up alone
Not knowing where to belong
It means to have two countries, two cultures, two families
Two identities that struggle to meet

To grow up Asian American is to grow up alone
It means that no matter where I look,
I am divided. Not fully accepted by either side.
A community undiscovered. A heart hurt and broken
Waiting to be whole.
