To Have Loved

It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all,
But did they ever expect love to be my downfall?

I loved with all my heart, gave him all he desired,
Now I have nothing left, for my love had backfired.

He tore me to shreds with bitter words filled with hate,
Let me wither away in my pathetic state.

Broken and beaten yet he was not finished,
He had to be sure every last piece of me was diminished.

With a cold heart he hit me with one last strike,
Said I was nothing then placed my heart on a spike.

So my heart begins to crumble but there it will forever stay,
Although I fear it will not survive another day.

Now that's my reward for having loved him,
Eternal pain that cuts deep from limb to limb.

A death wish burning with an immortal flame,
And if I were to grant it love would be to blame.

So tell me, when you're standing on the edge just about to fall,
Is it better to have loved and lost than never have to loved at all?
