To the Lost

It never would have mattered,
if only I had known.
It didn't have to be this way:
You should not have been alone.

It never would have mattered,
my love for you was great.
I didn't care what others thought,
we could have transcended all the hate.

It never would have mattered,
this thing you sought to hide.
What really matters most of all
is who you are inside.

It never would have mattered,
the person you became.
You had so much to offer,
we can't all be the same.

Now what really matters
is how much my heart still aches.
If only you had realized,
God never makes mistakes.
