Trees of Winter

Ode to the strength
of the trees of winter.
Ode to the satisfying decay
of gray matted branches.
Ode to the worshipful flow
of the branches upward.
Ode to the diversity
of its roadside constituents.
Ode to deciduous brother
and evergreen sister.
Ode to those laid bare
and those covered still.
Ode to the dying canopy
and the virgin earth floor.
Ode to the stark exposure
of barren limbs.
Ode to the sweet lichen
and needy parasite friends.
Ode to the transparent ugliness
and the breathtaking splendor.
Ode to the strength
of the trees of winter.
